Mi Ami

Decade

SILK020–LP ($12)

One of our favorite bands of all times keeps revving into new times and fresh ideals for living, and their latest, Decade, dives days deeper into the decadent freeform freakout-house electronic-autobahn hybrids they previously touched down on with last year’s Dolphins 12”. Recorded in New York across several summer days and nights, Decade is a more spacious, elegant, and confident expression of this next-wave Mi Ami incarnation, drawing on all Damon and Daniel’s shared musical obsessions and telekinetic chemistry. Bold, beautiful, and bizarre.

Fort Romeau

Kingdoms

SILK022–12" ($12)

Sensual, immaculate, jackin’ romance masterpieces by boy London and rarefied studio craftsman Fort Romeau aka Mike Norris. Every song on Kingdoms is a swooning swirl of synth delicacy, microscopic crate-digger production nuance, house-pulse heartbeats, heavy breathing, empty 3 AM South London streets, night bus stops in the rain, memories, etc. A remarkably accomplished and emotionally affecting collection of dancefloor ghost-soul anthems.

Body Double

My Life (What You Need)

SILK019–12" ($9)

An insane personal fave of the recent SILK wave (have thrown “My Life” into DJ sets across three continents and it never fails to put a stomp in the step of everyone in the room). A long-distance collab between LA/NY DJ Manderson and a Vancouver-based globe-cruiser multi-instrumentalist-producer Szam, Body Double already have a 2nd 12” on Tokyo’s Big Love label, plus a host of weirdly worldwide future plans. This single slays for days, slamming industrial swagger vox samples pitch-shifting through heavy vox, dope soundtrack synths, crack rimshots, jacked out percussion fills, total grandiosity in the best possible way. The flip, “Be Strong,” is arguably even sicker.

Polonaise

Trocadero

SILK018–12" ($9)

Stripped-down acid bounce and robotech house debut from this killer PDX duo (feat. Scott Goodwin of Bonus and Operative) tag-teams between various vintage gear cornerstones, piano samples, synthetic bass sequences, tonal meditation, an array of classic drum machine configurations, and tranced sequencer patterns, layering them into stark, striking electronic architectures.

Design

Hangin'

SILK028–CS ($5)

Mysterious San Fran bunker duo Design craft primitive late-nite fog cruises, groove prototypes, and ambient hypno-soundbaths with a basement of 909s, sequencers, synths, and verious other craigslisted gear impulse buys. The lo-fi cloak over these sessions captures the loose mood and late hour with an effortless touch. A great grower of a tape.

Coyote Clean Up

Frozen Solid

SILK027–CS

Cassette #3 in SILK's tape train is an opus by mastermind Detroit producer CJ aka Coyote Clean Up, packed to the rafters with slinky, drugged club mutations. It's got it all – murky laser bangers, a 3 Chairs cover, textural echo chambers, dusty percussion production, arpeggiating ecstasies, sick hooks that drop out of nowhere right after you've been hypnotized into k-hole trance, etc. 47 rich minutes of multi-hued frozen bliss.

Strategy

Boxy Music

SILK021–12" ($11)

PDX lifer Paul Dickow aka Strategy has explored realms as rarified as digital tech-dub, synthesizer soundtracks, and psych-sampledelica, and dropped releases for labels as geographically/genre divergent as Kranky, Under The Spire, and Endless Flight, as well as helmed the Community Library label for over a decade. For his 100% Silk debut, Boxy Music, he collects together 5 of his most sophisticated and dynamic tracks, fusing kraut-tech, swirling piano house, and pulse-dub for an immersive sphere of dope electronic mastery. A hugely underrated force in the west coast avant-electrical musical universe.

Polysick

Flow FM

SILK026–CS

Tape #2 in 100% Silk’s limited DJ cassette series finds Rome’s dopest channel surfer crafting 2 scrambled sides of alien acid, wired house, bootleg beat enigmas, and general dancefloor next-level-ness. Apparently a Planet Mu full-length is in the works, plus a SILK platter, so clearly this guy’s bomb. Tune in and turn on.

Bobby Browser

Just Browsing

SILK017–12"

Vinyl debut by visionary San Fran gear guru Bobby Browser is an exquisite EP of body-rocking pleasure trips swirling with dizzy synth lines and 303 champagne bubbles. Cuts like “Smooth Cruise” and “No Appointments” (featuring epic ‘Smalltown Boy’-style grey sky soul vox by Group Rhoda’s Mara Barenbaum) really define his unique dancefloor style, loose and intuitive and west coast but still anthemic and elegantly architected. A follow up’s already in the works: Still Browsing.

SFV Acid

Grown

SILK016–12" ($9)

San Fernando Valley acid specialist Zane Reynolds is one of the LA basin’s best electronic groove merchants, fusing together a maze of lesser-jammed strains of 80s and 90s dancefloor micro-styles for something totally unique, wacked out, playful, and hypnotized. His previous EP on the PPM label was excellent but these might be his best trax to date, bouncy and faded and jazzy all at the same time. Features an inspired cover of the club classic “It’s You."

Maria Minerva

Sacred & Profane Love

SILK013–12"

Tallinn’s finest closes out a powerhouse debut year with her most confident collection yet of alternate universe club/love anthems, channeled through the warped East Euro sieve of Maria’s magic eye. Deep, gold-sweat cuts like “A Love So Strong” and “Gloria” and “Another Time & Place” are some of the most enticingly housed-out dancefloor sphinxes in her oeuvre, and are surprisingly light on the classic bedroom haze production style, favoring instead a crisp, shimmering bath-house mode that’s as pure pleasure as the lyrical agenda. Exquisite weirdo beauty, and DJ gold for the bold heads in the booth. 5 tracks total, plus a killer Ital remix. Black vinyl 12 inches in epic metallic foil-stamped medieval illustration jackets (first SILK 12” not in a label disco sleeve).

Malvoeaux

Broken Anthem

SILK015–12" ($9)

Unspeakably bangin’ filter-house masterworks by Bushwick dance savant Jason Letkiewicz (of Innergaze, Steve Summers, Rhythm Based Lovers, etc) under his Malvoeaux moniker. Ridiculously sick disco edits and groove guitar licks are overlapped, processed, and pumped up with superbass house heartbeats to create something lush and legendary. The A side cuts have a pure dancefloor agenda while the B tracks go for something a little more sweaty and low-lit. Another choice gold chain in this relentlessly creative producer’s analog pawn shop. Maybe the best SILK 12” so far?? Can’t stop won’t stop.

Magic Touch

I Can Feel The Heat

SILK009–12"

Ripping, ruling disco overdrive courtesy of Mi Ami/Jonas Reinhardt rhythm king, Damon Palermo. “I Can Feel The Heat” freebases 25 years worth of low-lit pleasure boogie into a condensed seven minute shredfest of electric abandon. The flip, “Clubhouse,” is equally mesmerizing, groove-riding nuanced 90’s drum patterns under a glitter sky of synth-strings and blood-pumping orchestra hits. Beyond epic.
